The perfectly delicious simplicity of the pear clafoutis, the perfect emotional foil for those days when terrible people do their very best to ruin your day, week, and month with their terrible-ness. And I had two pears that were about to go meet Jesus. And Julia also adored a clafoutis.

Also, I beg of you, please do not pronounce it ku•FLOU•tiss. Exactly one person in this world will understand this cruel, unnecessarily wicked attempt at humor, but just don’t do it. This is an emotional support clafoutis and I might snap today.

Years ago, a not-so-humble restaurant critic humble bragged about how he remained so surprisingly thin. “I can tell if it’s delicious in the first bite and stop. I have to keep eating the problem dishes to figure out what went wrong.” I knew that this croissant was delicious with the first bite but I could not stop eating it. Where did I go wrong?

On another note, I was going to stop for this perfect croissant on my way to yesterday’s protests, on the very real possibility that the orange felon declared Martial Law, ordered us shot, and it was my last meal. Alas, when I arrived, Clark Street was closed. I returned today jubilant, still high on the reminder that there are good people in this world and those good people will, together, one day overcome. #handsoff

tip o’ the hat to the good people at @coffeecommissary glendale. at a time when hospitality is struggling, they remain almost shockingly exemplary. the staff is noticeably friendly and well trained, and the place runs like a well oiled machine, with daily lines out the door that rarely subside. the coffee is pretty spectacular, too.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day …

I brought the veggy plate that no one ever eats to the party and no one ate it. Instead, perhaps I should have served two-day-old leftovers charred with EVOO, thyme and oregano because yum. There’s also two unopened jars of caper berries that I completely forgot about that I’ll also have to force myself to choke down. Insert sad face here.

I was so happy to be back in Santa Monica today vi

I was so happy to be back in Santa Monica today visiting friends, but I was positively giddy when I realized we’d be driving right by Petitgrain Boulangerie. I could already taste the perfect croissant and I’d had joyful visions of it shattering crumbs all over the car as I broke off a taste for everyone. Of course, I arrived at an (in)decent weekend afternoon hour and there was nary a perfect croissant in sight. They were just about to close because they’d sold out the entire pastry case for the day. After all our city has endured, I was delighted to see a sold out pastry case! That perfect croissant will gladly wait until another day, but this savory scone that I grabbed as consolation knocked my socks off! And yes, I absolutely will be going in for those remaining crumbs!
