VERLAINE BRINGS NEW LIFE AND NEW VISION TO A BELOVED LOS ANGELES DINING INSTITUTION

Owners Matthew Hechter and Christopher Brandon (Select Hospitality & Design associates with proprietorship in Santa Monica’s Hinterland and New York City’s Hudson Clearwater restaurants) have most recently partnered with acclaimed Chef Diego Hernandez to re-envision the beloved Dominick’s Restaurant in West Hollywood, California.  Following sixty-nine years along Beverly Boulevard, the painstaking planning and design engineering of the space spanned one entire year, with a mandate to honor and preserve what came before, as well as effectively utilize the entirety of the space, much of which has never before been enjoyed by the public.  Fans of the old Dominick’s will immediately note that the entrance has been relocated from the front, indoor dining room to a side garden corridor that was previously utilized only as a service entrance.  This long, graceful entrance corridor is flanked with lush new trees and plantings, offering a nod to the past with a glimpse of the original Dominick’s neon sign that rested atop the building for decades. The corridor sweeps guests into the main bar area, a  uniquely recognizable area of the old Dominick’s, now offering a surplus of marble topped seating arrangements and ample gathering space for cocktails and small bites. The rear gardens now comprise the main dining room of Verlaine, a refreshing garden patio that celebrates the eternal sunshine of Southern California, with open skies and blooming, fragrant plants serving as the casually elegant backdrop to Los Angeles’ most anticipated new menus.  Pinstriped banquettes are arranged in the fashion of old Hollywood, with brass design points merging with black marble, brick, antique floor tiles, and emerald green plaster of paris walls, seamlessly offering a fresh, vibrant vision of Hollywood new and old. The indoor bar and dining room is reserved exclusively for private functions and events.

Hechter and Brandon have partnered with Chef Diego Hernandez to bring an altogether new vision to the Verlaine table. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Valle de Guadalupe in Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, Hernandez has led the kitchen of the acclaimed restaurant Corazon de Tierra for six years, celebrated among the World’s 50 Best Restaurants of Latin America (#39 #LatAm50Best), a coveted award that the restaurant has enjoyed for four consecutive years. Hernandez mentored alongside esteemed Chefs Enrique Olvera at Mexico City’s acclaimed Restaurant Pujol (#5 #LatAm50Best) and Chef Guillermo Gonzalez Beristain at Monterrey’s Pangea Restaurant (#19 #LatAm50Best). With Verlaine, Chef Hernandez introduces his first restaurant home in the United States.  Hernandez plans Verlaine to speak to the philosophies of his award winning Baja dining room, offering an intensely focused celebration of California’s organic farming and fishing communities. Hernández’ motto is “organic, local, sustainable,” – his Baja restaurant grows herbs, fruits, and vegetables, producing olive oils and honey, with other ingredients supplied locally. As well, chef has established his restaurant among the most highly coveted by culinary tourists from Southern California and around the globe.  Chef has spent much of the previous year establishing these close, personal relationships throughout the farming regions of California, with a unique vision of seasonality and artistry presented on each Verlaine dinner plate.

Select Hospitality & Design was created in 2014 by partners Matthew Hechter and Christopher Brandon, the company behind Santa Monica’s Hinterland, and part of the team behind Hudson Clearwater Restaurant in Manhattan’s West Village.  In partnership with Chef Diego Hernandez, the group will debut Verlaine Restaurant in the iconic former home to Dominick’s Restaurant in West Hollywood, CA on Tuesday, March 28, 2017. Additional chef focused restaurants, lifestyle and design projects are slated by the group to debut throughout Southern California in the coming months.

On Thursday, March 28, 2013 Osteria La Buca will host the first in an endless series of dinner parties – THE SALON AT OSTERIA LA BUCA.

Last month, La Buca began offering “The Dinner Party.”  Held in the privacy of the upstairs Pasta Room (during the daytime hours, this space is used only for making fresh pasta for lunch and dinner service), the space offers it’s own private entrance, a view from above of the entire restaurant, and a $30.00 pp “All-You-Can-Eat & Drink” of simple greens, spaghetti & meatballs, and lush Italian red wine (min six guests, max ten).  An instant success, the room now finds itself booked most every evening of the week.  Observing the popularity of the space, as well as the conversation and camaraderie that it promotes, OLB has taken the idea one step further – The Salon.

The Salon at La Buca will be offered one evening each month.  The evening will feature the ‘All You Can Eat & Drink’ of The Dinner Party, with one notable addition – The Salon places a premium on conversation.  All of our guests will be invited to join The Salon with our compliments because they have important thoughts, ideas, and opinions to bring to the table.  A diverse group of individuals will be invited to the inaugural Salon, perhaps a scientist, an artist, a writer, a DJ, a chef, or designer – entrepreneurs that have a vested interest in exploring and improving our community.  The inaugural Salon invitees will be hand selected by the staff and owners of La Buca. Prospective guests may RSVP to salon@osterialabuca.com, offering creative suggestions as to why they will make the perfect Salon guest. Whether that RSVP arrives in the form of a poem, a screenplay, a docudrama, a recipe, a video, a manifesto, a drawing, a biography, or a haiku is at the complete discretion of the hopeful guest. As with good conversation, individuality, creativity, and thoughtful opinion will be rewarded with an invitation to join the group.  After the inaugural Salon, guests of the first dinner will be invited to hand select the guests for the second, continuing every month thereafter.

Why The Salon?  Los Angeles is home to a hotbed of contemporary artists, writers, talented chefs, musicians, city planners, and political activists that are changing the world on a daily basis.  Our city creates and often dictates popular culture. Our reputation as a city, however, is often derived only from stereotypes that have long since vanished.  We love our city and we treasure our talented citizens and their contributions to our community.  Gathering brilliant personalities around the dinner table is the very essence of a restaurant – good food & drink, good people, and good conversation.  At the very least, good memories will ensue.  At the most, we just may arrive at a few solutions for a couple of our city’s greatest challenges.  We are confident that the bonds that are built during The Salon will carry forth afterward into our community, enriching our neighborhood and our world.

REVEALING THE POWER OF FOOD

“Thanks to your teaching and your example, I know what my destiny is,” said Chef Jose Andres of Robert Egger, the founder of the life changing and life saving D.C. Central Kitchen. This accolade was given recently in Washington, D.C. as the founder of this inspired philanthropic organization stepped down from his position to travel west to create L.A. Kitchen.  The highlights of the evening included the first ever $1 million grant from the AARP Foundation to begin his work here, as well as a $50,000.00 anonymous donation earmarked for website and online support networks.  The Washington, D.C. City Council declared January 20th “Robert Egger Day,” in honor of the good works of the man and his organization.

Mr. Egger arrives in Los Angeles, his former home, in order to bring the power of this philanthropic model to the west coast cities that have struggled to find solutions to homelessness, poverty, and hunger in our city. During the ceremony honoring Mr. Egger, Dan Glickman cited the teachings of the Talmud, offering “Whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved the entire world.”

The time has arrived for the most fortunate among us to assume the responsibility of an outstretched hand, indeed a meaningful gesture to save the lives of our friends and neighbors in Los Angeles.

Mr. Egger has created a brilliantly insightful business model that simultaneously reduces food waste, feeds the hungry, and prepares the unemployed for work, all issues that have long been ignored and unattended in Los Angeles. This insightful man brings a plan for changing our city for the better, for productively dealing with some of our city’s most dire human issues, and in the process making us all better people and better citizens.

We gratefully and sincerely welcome that arrival of Mr. Egger and the L.A. Kitchen.  We invite you to do similarly, and to support this wonderful new organization with your time, your talents, and your gifts.

Chefs Bruce Kalman & Gavin Mills Join Forces

To Benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand

Two acclaimed Los Angeles chefs, Bruce Kalman of downtown’s Urbano Pizza Bar and Gavin Mills of Hollywood’s Wood + Vine will join forces on Sunday, April 1 for the first installment of a series of Cooking With Friends Events, each to be hosted by Kalman and Urbano. The inaugural event, “Pig & Beer,” features a multi course porcine feast, with beverages curated by “The Beer Chicks” Christina Perrozi and Hallie Beaune.

The chefs have hand selected Pigs from ReRide Ranch in Lake Hughes, CA, which offers free range, acorn fed herds.  From this, the two chefs will alternate in presenting and discussing each successive course, from the savory and sweet to the weird and wild, each paired with a new beverage of the Beer Chicks’ choosing.  In addition, area farmers have joined for the evening, with growers from ReRide Ranch, Weiser Family Farm, Coleman Farms, Thao Farms, and more arriving with donated products for the chefs to cook, as well many arriving in person to discuss their connections to the land, the dinner table, and our charity.  As well, the staff of Urbano Pizza Bar is volunteering their time and efforts for this evening.

Due to space requirements and menu planning, admission for this event is strictly limited.

LUCA ON SUNSET Celebrates Oscar Sunday

It’s Oscar weekend.  Joan Rivers is busy with an emergency touch up.  Stylists all over town are suffering panic attacks.  The ladies of the red carpet haven’t eaten solid food in weeks.   And we mere mortals… absolutely cannot get enough!

Chef Bruce Kalman quietly assumed the Executive Chef position for downtown’s bustling Urbano Pizza Bar, bringing with him a market driven menu of pizzas, with a new focus on fresh vegetables and a selection of market produced antipasti and charcuterie.

Most recently, Chef kalman is recognizable as the opening Chef of Santa Monica’s Misfit Bar, where he became a mainstay at the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market.  The proximity to the market allowed him to build an unusual bond with the many farmers and purveyors that frequent the market, building a unique network of suppliers virtually unheard of in an urban setting.

Chef Kalman’s astonishingly affordable menus are now in being served at Urbano Pizza Bar, with offerings such as “Pulled To Order” Fresh Mozzarella ($8); Chef’s selections of Salumi ($12) and AntiPasti ($6); Roasted Garlic ($4); Leafy Broccoli ($7); Heirloom Fingerling Potatoes ($6); and Braised Greens with house smoked bacon  & Lodi beans ($6).  As well, Kaman has added a new selection of vegan cheese and gluten free pizza crust, upon request, all available with a wide selection of fresh vegetable toppings.

To kick off the new menu, Urbano offers “Pizza Happy Hour” – the perfect respite for downtown meetings, greetings and after work imbibing.  Monday through Friday, 3pm until 7pm, Urbano offers all pizza at half off the dinner menu pricing, along with all draft beer for a mere $4.  The Pizza Happy Hour is by far the best deal in town, as Chef Kalman has intentionally created his menus to offer affordable, delicious, and healthful options.
